British actor Ben Whishaw, renowned for his role in Paddington, is set to grace the West End stage in a new rendition of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot.

The 43-year-old actor attributes the play to a pivotal moment in his life, prompting him to abandon university over two decades ago and pursue a career in acting. Whishaw expresses a mix of thrill, excitement, and a touch of trepidation about this upcoming endeavor, where he'll share the stage with Lucian Msamati, known for his roles in Game of Thrones and Gangs of London.

Directed by James MacDonald, the production is scheduled to premiere at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in September 2024. Whishaw recounts the transformative experience that led him to the world of acting after witnessing a Samuel Beckett play at the Barbican Theatre at the age of 18. This life-changing encounter with Waiting for Godot, the play he describes as "utterly radical and incredibly beautiful," has lingered in his memory for 25 years.

In this rendition, Whishaw will portray Vladimir, while Msamati takes on the role of Estragon. Waiting For Godot, written by Beckett in the late 1940s, stands as one of the most acclaimed plays of the last century. The narrative centers around two men waiting for someone named Godot under a tree, engaging in a series of discussions that trap them in a state of perpetual waiting.

The last West End staging of Waiting For Godot occurred in 2009, featuring the iconic duo Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen. Whishaw, known for portraying Q in the James Bond films and his role in the adaptation of Adam Kay's medical memoir, This is Going to Hurt, expresses anticipation for the opportunity to perform alongside Msamati and MacDonald.

Msamati, famed for his work in Game of Thrones and other notable series, looks forward to creating mischief with MacDonald and reuniting with the creative brilliance of Ben Whishaw. Tickets for the production will be available for purchase in February, with additional casting announcements expected in the coming months.
